100% From Wild Civet: Pure Perfection from Bean to Cup
Updated: 11 September 2024
Kopi Luwak, also known as Luwak Coffee is a rare and exotic coffee beans produced from the finest Arabica beans and the wild luwak (Asian Palm Civet) from the mountains of central Aceh in Sumatra and West Java.
Kopi Luwak is the world’s most exclusive (and expensive) coffee. The main reason for its high price is the unusual method of production.
It is made from coffee beans that have been partially digested by the Indonesian palm civet and then excreted. Yes, it sounds awful, but don’t worry. The outer layer of the coffee bean is removed during processing, and the remaining beans are thoroughly cleaned before roasting and sent to you.
Despite common misconceptions, Kopi Luwak is not a variety of coffee, but rather a method of coffee processing. As a result, the flavor might vary significantly depending on the bean source and the roasting method used. Our beans come from Aceh Gayo and West Java, Indonesia, which are the original and best places to produce Kopi Luwak.
It is clearly not bitter and is exceptionally aromatic. It has a complex flavor profile that includes smooth, earthy, and sweet notes with a hint of chocolate.
Please keep in mind that because Kopi Luwak is so popular, multiple plantations breed palm civets in horrible conditions to produce it.
This is not only inhumane, but it also produces inferior coffee because the civet’s digestive system is harmed by an improper diet.
The healthy enzymes found in Kopi Luwak contribute to its unique characteristics. If the diet is deficient, the enzymatic process will be inefficient. At specialtycoffee.id, all of our civets enjoy cage-free and healthy lives.

Our Own Direct Collector
Plantation
Kopi Luwak Coffee is produced by our own people on 1,200 acres of our plantation, which has Organic Certification and legal certification by the local government of central Aceh.
Direct Collector
Three teams with a total of 18 people direct from our company collect the coffee beans from the wild luwak on our own land no contractors or farms are used, and the luwak are free to pick the choicest coffee beans available.
After the beans are collected (PARCHMENT), we select only the best coffee beans, or about fifty percent of total coffee collected.
The entire harvesting and manufacturing process is controlled and supervised by Indonesia Specialty Coffee.
Thus we can maintain the excellent quality of our Kopi Luwak Coffee, producing it under pristine conditions in accordance with internationally recognized quality standards.
Our Kopi Luwak Coffee is 100 percent safe and hygienic, thoroughly cleaned, hulled and treated with ultraviolet to kill any possible bacteria. We process our Kopi Luwak Coffee by the following method.
We personally test and grade each batch of Kopi Luwak Coffee for aroma, flavor, acidity, body, aftertaste and overall balance.
The result is an extraordinarily smooth cup of coffee with a balanced composition of acidity and body, a nutty aroma and flavor notes of chocolate, fresh roasted almonds and linger on the tongue with a long, clean aftertaste.
We have our own Q-Grader onsite to ensure the cupping quality has a minimum score of 80, meaning only the highest quality luwak coffee is sold. Our Q-Grader is also a Star Cupper, qualified to judge coffee contests at an international level.
Herry Setiawan holds Q grader and Star Cupper Certification from the SCAI (Specialty Coffee Association of Indonesia), Agribusiness Market and Support Activity (AMARTA) and the U.S. Agency.
Kopi is the Indonesian word that has meaning “coffee“, and Luwak refers to a small, ferret-like animal similar to a cat. Thus, Kopi Luwak is often nicknamed “cat poop coffee,” a term familiar to many.
However, this name is somewhat misleading since civets, specifically Asian Palm Civets, are not actually cats. They are related animals native to Southeast Asian countries such as Indonesia, the Philippines, and Vietnam.
Civets play a crucial role in the production of Kopi Luwak. They act as quality gatekeepers, selecting only the choosing only the ripest, not damaged and sweetest cherries available. As a result, Kopi Luwak includes only the highest quality coffee cherries.
Beyond selecting the best cherries, the flavor of the coffee is further enhanced as the beans pass through the civet’s digestive system. A unique enzymatic process occurs in the civet’s stomach, where acids interact with the beans, making them less acidic and smoother.
Yes! The beans are thoroughly cleaned and then roasted at high temperatures (over 200°C). Both processes ensure that Kopi Luwak is 100% safe to drink.

Carter hands Edward an article about Kopi Luwak, Edward’s favorite coffee.
Carter Chambers: Read it.
Edward Cole: [reading] Kopi Luwak is the world’s most expensive coffee. Though for some, it falls under the category of “too good to be true.” In the Sumatran village, where the beans are grown, lives a breed of wild tree cat. These cats eat the beans, digest them and then… defecate. [pauses] The villagers then collect and process the stools. It is the combination of the beans and the gastric juices of the tree cat that give Kopi Luwak.
Carter starts laughing.
Edward Cole: …its unique flavor… and aroma. You’re shitting me!
Carter Chambers: [laughing] Cats beat me to it!
Carter and Edward both laugh hysterically.
