Cheap green coffee beans start at $4,400 per metric tonne FOB Belawan, or $4.40 per kg, for Sumatra Robusta Grade 4b. That is the floor in our August 2026 catalogue, and the ceiling on the Robusta side is $5.60 per kg. This guide gives you the full low-cost price ladder from Indonesia Specialty Coffee, Robusta and Arabica, what changes at every step down, and the point where buying cheap stops saving you anything.

How Much Do Cheap Green Coffee Beans Cost?
Low-cost Indonesian Robusta green coffee trades between $4.40 and $5.60 per kg FOB. Low-cost Arabica starts around $7.55 per kg. Those are catalogue figures from Medan, indicative and subject to confirmation at order.
For reference, other Indonesian exporters quote Robusta around $4.85 per kg FOB on 5 MT minimums. So the cheap end of this market is narrow, and anyone quoting you well below $4.40 per kg is either shipping past crop, shipping wet, or shipping something they have not graded. The useful question is not who is cheapest. It is what your price buys.
Robusta Green Coffee Price Ladder
Robusta is where cheap green coffee actually lives. Indonesian Robusta is natural (dry) process cherry, some lots semi-washed, then wet-hulled (Giling Basah), which is the combination behind its heavy body and low acidity.
Every lot below ships at maximum 13 percent moisture, graded against SNI 01-2907-2008.
| Lot | Screen size | Defect value (300 g) | USD/MT | USD/kg |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sumatra Robusta Grade 4b/EK1 | 13-19 | 61-80 | $4,400 | $4.40 |
| Sumatra Robusta Grade 4a/EK1 | 13-19 | 46-60 | $4,450 | $4.45 |
| Robusta Lampung Grade 3 | 15-19 | 45 | $4,500 | $4.50 |
| Robusta Lampung Grade 2 | 15-19 | 25 | $4,600 | $4.60 |
| Sumatra Robusta ELB 350 BC Grade 1 | 19 | 11 | $4,900 | $4.90 |
| Robusta Bali Kintamani ELB 350 BC | 15-19 | 11 | $5,600 | $5.60 |
Read that table twice. The entire Robusta quality range, from 80 defects to 11 defects, spans $1.20 per kg. Buyers routinely spend weeks negotiating a spread narrower than the one they could simply buy their way out of.
Our staff Q Graders cup Robusta Lampung at 82 points and Robusta Sidikalang at 81 points on the SCA scale, which puts both inside the commercial specialty band of 80 to 82. Cheap and ungraded are not the same thing.
The Cheapest Arabica Worth Roasting
Arabica does not go as low, and the entry point matters more because the gap between grades is wider.
| Lot | Screen size | Defect value | USD/MT | USD/kg |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mandheling Grade 3 Special | 13-18 | As per sample | $7,550 | $7.55 |
| Mandheling Grade 3 | 15-19 | 24-44 | $8,450 | $8.45 |
| Mandheling Grade 2 | 15-19 | 15-25 | $9,050 | $9.05 |
| Aceh Gayo Grade 1 | 15-19 | Max 11 | $9,400 | $9.40 |
Mandheling is semi-washed cherry, wet-hulled, cupping at 85.75 points at origin level with earthy, cocoa, and tobacco notes. Our catalogue lists Grade 2 and Grade 3 as suitable for mixed drink materials, which is the honest read: these are blend and milk-drink lots, not single-origin filter lots. Aceh Gayo Grade 1 at 85.88 points is where single origin starts.

What You Give Up as the Price Drops
Grading under SNI 01-2907-2008 counts defects in a 300 gram sample. Broken beans, blacks, husk, stones, and insect damage each carry a weighting, and the sum is the defect value. Lower is cleaner. Moving from Grade 4b at 61 to 80 defects up to ELB 350 BC Grade 1 at a defect value of 11 costs $0.50 per kg. On a 19.2 MT container that is roughly $9,600, and it buys you a lot you can sell as single origin instead of blend filler.
Screen size moves with the price. Grade 4b runs screen 13 to 19, a wide spread that roasts unevenly because small beans finish before large ones reach first crack. ELB 350 BC Grade 1 is screen 19, uniform, and forgiving in the drum. One thing worth knowing before you compare our quote to anyone else’s. Cheap does not mean wet. Every grade in our catalogue, from Grade 4b at $4.40 to Bali Kintamani at $5.60, ships at maximum 13 percent moisture. The oldest trick for making a low FOB number look attractive is shipping the coffee heavy, so ask for the moisture spec in writing before you compare per-kg figures.
When Cheap Green Coffee Costs More Than It Saves
Three situations where the cheapest lot is the wrong buy.
- You are roasting for single origin or filter. High-defect lots carry broken beans that scorch before the batch develops, and blacks that show up as a flat, papery note in the cup. At 45 defects and above, plan on blending or dark roasting.
- You are paying for hand sorting. If your operation sorts on arrival, the labour can exceed the $0.50 per kg you saved. Buy the cleaner grade and skip the step.
- Your application hides nothing. Robusta at 45 defects disappears inside an espresso blend under milk or in soluble production. The same lot in a 250 g retail bag of single origin will get returned.
Match the grade to where the coffee ends up. That single decision saves more money than negotiating the price does.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much do cheap green coffee beans cost?
Low-cost Indonesian Robusta green coffee runs $4.40 to $5.60 per kg FOB Belawan, and low-cost Arabica starts near $7.55 per kg. Prices depend on grade, defect value, and screen size. Indonesia Specialty Coffee quotes container loads per metric tonne, indicative and confirmed at order.
What is the cheapest green coffee bean you can buy?
Sumatra Robusta Grade 4b/EK1 at $4,400 per metric tonne, or $4.40 per kg, is the lowest-cost lot in our August 2026 catalogue. It carries a defect value of 61 to 80 in a 300 gram sample and screen size 13 to 19, so it suits blends and soluble production.
Does cheap green coffee taste bad?
Not automatically. Our staff Q Graders cup Robusta Lampung at 82 points and Robusta Sidikalang at 81, both inside the commercial specialty band. What cheap lots lose is uniformity, not flavour. High defect counts show up as uneven roasting and occasional off cups rather than a bad coffee.
What is defect value in green coffee grading?
Defect value is the weighted count of defects found in a 300 gram sample under SNI 01-2907-2008. Broken beans, black beans, husk, stones, and insect damage each carry a score. Grade 1 sits at a defect value of 11 or lower. Grade 4b runs 61 to 80.
Where can I buy cheap green coffee beans in bulk?
Indonesia Specialty Coffee supplies low-cost Robusta and Arabica green coffee from Medan, North Sumatra, shipping FOB Belawan in 60 kg jute bags or GrainPro. Order a 1 kg sample first, then scale to microlot, wholesale, or container volume. Contact us for a current quote.
